A dance ball is elegant and sometimes a bit intimidating. The most important rules are quickly explained, after that all that matters is that you are there.
A dance floor has a direction of travel and a center. The outer lane is for moving, the inner area is for turning. If you know these two zones, you will hardly do anything wrong on the floor, everything else is just a matter of courtesy.
Practice the basic step once without music, just by counting - it will be easier not to lose it in the hustle and bustle of the dance floor afterwards.
First, take a round to observe from the edge: how crowded is the floor, where is the dance direction, and which dances are playing.
Approach briefly, make eye contact, offer your hand. No one gets pulled by the arm: a no is a no.
Enter the flow of the dance, do not cross through the middle. If you wait for a gap, you will not disturb anyone.
Two figures, danced cleanly, look better than eight rushed ones. On a crowded floor, a sense of space is more important than your repertoire.
After the dance, say a quick thank you and escort the person back to their seat. This is the part that everyone notices.
