Cancel a dance course: Calculate the notice period and prove receipt

By Bernhard De LucaUpdated

In short
  • You determine the cancellation date based on the start of your contract, its minimum term and the applicable renewal clause in your dance course contract.
  • Your cancellation notice must reach the dance school no later than the last day of the notice period.
  • Clearly identify the contract and end date, and alternatively cancel at the earliest possible date.
  • Keep your cancellation notice and proof of receipt together, such as a dated acknowledgment on your copy.

Keep dancing after your contract ends

On udansa connect, you can find dance partners for a new course. Let them know when you could start after your contract ends, so the timing works for your first lesson together.

Keep dancing after your contract ends

The last dance class you attended does not end a contract. Especially if you haven't been attending the course for a while, payments may continue until your cancellation takes effect.

These are the documents you need

  • Contract and the terms and conditions included when it was signed
  • Contract date, start date and agreed minimum term
  • Customer number or unique course name
  • Contracting parties, including postal address or email address for receipt
  • Calendar and storage location for the text and proof of delivery

The renewal clause determines how you can exit

With an ongoing dance course contract, the minimum term and renewal are two different things. The minimum term initially binds you for the agreed period. After that, the valid renewal clause determines whether the contract ends or continues. So a monthly fee does not automatically mean that you can cancel monthly.

In Germany, there are limits on standard terms and conditions for consumer contracts involving regularly provided services. For contracts concluded on or after March 1, 2022, the initial commitment period in standard terms and conditions may generally be no longer than two years. The notice period before the end of the initial term may be no longer than one month. In principle, automatic renewal is only permitted for an indefinite period, with a notice period of no more than one month.

Different limits may apply to older contracts: under standard terms and conditions, renewals of up to one year and notice periods of up to three months were generally permitted. Individually negotiated agreements must be assessed separately. A clause in print is not valid simply because you signed it.

This guide covers ongoing contracts with a dance school. A membership in a folk dance club, by contrast, is governed in particular by the club's statutes. Private dance lessons arranged individually are also not automatically an ongoing subscription. If a clause is legally questionable, seek individual consumer advice instead of accepting the least favorable wording without checking it.

How to cancel effectively in seven steps

  1. Gather the contract details

Note the signing date, contract start date, minimum term, and notice period separately. Also copy the actual contracting party from the contract: a lesson location or brand name alone is not always the correct recipient.

  2. Determine the current contract end date

Determine the end of the initial term from the start date and agreed duration. If it has already expired, classify the extension based on the contract date: an effective fixed-term extension or an indefinite continuation with a notice period.

  3. Calculate the latest date for receipt

Example: If the term ends on December 31, 2026, and one month's notice is required, the notice of termination must be received no later than November 30, 2026. One month is not a period of four weeks. Allow several days of extra time.

  4. State your cancellation clearly

Use this core text: “I hereby terminate my dance course contract, customer number [number], with due notice effective [date], or alternatively at the earliest possible date. Please confirm receipt and the end of the contract in writing.” Add your full name, address, and today’s date.

  5. Choose the appropriate method of delivery

For consumer contracts concluded on or after October 1, 2016, a clause in the general terms and conditions may generally not require such declarations to be made in a form stricter than text form. An email may therefore suffice. To prove receipt, you can deliver the declaration in person in exchange for an acknowledgment of receipt or send it by registered mail with proof of delivery.

  6. Documenting delivery

Save the text you sent and the proof of receipt. For registered mail with proof of delivery, keep the posting receipt and any available proof of delivery, not just the tracking number. A person who witnesses the contents and mailing can also testify to the connection between the letter and the envelope.

  7. Check the confirmed end date

Compare the confirmed date with your calculation. If they differ, dispute it in writing with your contract details and proof of delivery. If no confirmation arrives, resend it through a traceable method while the deadline is still open. Its effectiveness does not depend on consent.

These differences are decisive in a dispute

Do it this way

  • Name the contracting party as the recipient
  • Prove it was received before the deadline
  • If sending by email, obtain explicit confirmation of receipt
  • Continue paying any contributions due until the contract ends

What not to do

  • Only casually inform the course instructor that you're withdrawing
  • Treat the postmark as proof that your notice arrived on time
  • Assume your Sent folder is reliable proof of receipt
  • Confuse a chargeback with a cancellation

Frequently asked questions

  1. You normally don't need to give a reason for an ordinary cancellation. What matters is that your notice is clear, can be assigned to the contract, and meets the required notice period. Giving a reason such as moving or lack of time does not replace the correct end date or proof of receipt, and on its own does not give you a special right to cancel.
