An exercise in attention, not a ban on thinking
Here, rumination means repetitive thinking that rarely leads you to a decision or a next step. You revisit the same question without getting any further. The dance session is not meant to solve this issue or prove that you can control your thoughts. For a short time, it offers a different, concrete task: feel a point of contact, follow a sound, choose a direction.
Movement alone does not guarantee an interruption. If you learn a difficult sequence of steps, judge yourself in the mirror, or follow memories in the song, it can add another thing to focus on. That is why the movement is deliberately simple. The measure is not freedom from thoughts, but whether you can turn your attention to something else for a while. A thought can arise while your feet keep moving.
You don’t need a particular dance style or a regular dance partner for this. Dancing alone removes the need to coordinate; with a partner, a predictable movement without surprising figures is enough. By the way, a subjectively calmer mind is not a measurement of your stress hormones, as the article on Dancing and cortisol explains. This recreational session is not a treatment either. The structure of a dance therapy session belongs in a different context: there, movement is therapeutically guided rather than tried out on your own as a brief interruption.
