Learn Voguing: The five pillars of the legendary dance style

By Mary De LucaUpdated

In a nutshell
  • Voguing is based on the five pillars: hands, catwalk, duckwalk, spins & dips, and floor performance.
  • The catwalk requires walking on an exact line with strong, rhythmic hip movement.
  • During the duckwalk, you move forward in a bouncy, deep squat while keeping your upper body upright.
  • Precise spins often end in a controlled, fluid dip on the dance floor.

Voguing fascinates with razor-sharp lines, proud walks, and dramatic poses. Learn here how to understand the five elementary pillars of this dance style and execute the first steps cleanly.

DefinitionVoguing

Voguing is an urban dance style that originated in the New York ballroom scene and is characterized by stylized movements reminiscent of fashion poses. The style combines linear arm movements, proud walks, and acrobatic floor elements.

The fascination behind the precise poses

Voguing is much more than just posing for an imaginary fashion magazine. The dance style, which emerged in the ballroom scenes of the New York LGBTQ community, is characterized by exact body control and an unmistakable presence. Anyone who wants to learn Voguing quickly realizes that the style requires enormous body tension and a distinct sense of rhythm. The movements are extremely precise, often geometric, and demand a lot from the joints. Unlike other urban dance styles, this is not about a relaxed groove, but about the conscious staging of every single second.

To understand the basics, it is worth taking a look at the different Voguing styles. While the historical Old Way is based on clear lines, symmetry, and fluid transitions, the New Way brings extreme flexibility, clicking movements of the wrists, and complex geometric patterns. Those who choose the dynamic, often dramatic Vogue Femme focus on extreme femininity and fluid, yet accentuated movements. The following applies to all styles: the five elements form the unshakeable foundation upon which every performance is built. A solid sense of body awareness is essential for this, similar to ballet posture for beginners.

The five elements and how to perform them

The five elements of Voguing, especially in Vogue Femme, are divided into clear movement patterns. The first element is Hands: intricate, fast hand and arm movements that tell stories or frame the face. This is followed by the Catwalk, an elegant, proud walk in a straight line where the hips swing intensely. The Duckwalk brings the movement to the floor: in a deep squat, you hop rhythmically forward and kick your feet out alternately. The fourth element consists of Spins and Dips: fast turns that often end in a spectacular, controlled drop to the floor. Finally, there is Floor Performance, which refers to graceful movements while lying or kneeling.

If you want to learn the runway walk, you primarily need to work on your balance. During the Catwalk, you place each foot directly in front of the other, almost as if you were balancing on a tightrope. Your shoulders remain calm and low, while your hips take over the entire dynamic. The Duckwalk, in turn, requires enormous strength in the thighs and knees. It is important here to keep your weight on the balls of your feet and keep your upper body upright. The coordination of these elements differs significantly from other urban styles, such as those you can learn in Freestyle Hip Hop.

Clean technique instead of injury risk

Correct

  • Warm up your wrists thoroughly before training
  • Practice the catwalk on a straight line
  • Keep your upper body upright during the duckwalk
  • Hit your poses exactly on the hard beats

Wrong

  • Going straight into the duckwalk without warming up
  • Placing your feet next to each other during the catwalk
  • Rounding your back and collapsing while in a squat
  • Letting movements become uncontrolled and sloppy in the space

Voguing is not just posing, it is a visual conversation with the space and the music, where every millimeter of the body is under absolute control.

Practical tips for your first training session at home

For getting started with Voguing, structured training is the key to success. Since your joints, especially your wrists, knees, and ankles, are under a lot of strain, a thorough warm-up is an absolute must. Always start your training with stretching exercises for your wrists and by activating your leg muscles. Isolate the movements first: practice the hand movements standing in front of a mirror before you try to combine them with steps. When doing the Duckwalk, you should only cover a few meters at a time at the beginning to avoid overloading your knees.

Another important aspect is musicality. Voguing is traditionally danced to House beats with distinctive snare hits or so-called crashes. Your poses and, above all, your dips must land exactly on these hard beats. Listen to the music very consciously and try to capture the accents with your hands or by stopping the movement abruptly. Only when you have mastered the individual elements while standing and at a slow tempo should you combine them into small sequences and increase the speed.
