Why the dance floor is not a classroom
You are on the dance floor, the music of Salsa, Bachata or Kizomba is playing, and suddenly your partner stops mid-movement. Instead of continuing to dance, they begin a detailed explanation of why your step was just wrong and how you need to move your hips correctly. In that moment, the relaxed party turns into an unplanned lesson. This phenomenon is known in the community as backseat teaching and regularly causes frustration.
The dance floor at a party is not a classroom. While corrections are desired and necessary in class, social dancing is all about the shared experience and having fun. Unsolicited advice interrupts the flow of the music, destroys the connection between the dancers, and often creates a feeling of inadequacy. Anyone who gives unsolicited instruction crosses an invisible line and takes away the ease from their partner.
