A carnival ball brings together different kinds of dance
When you read an invitation to a carnival ball in Augsburg, the name first tells you about the festive occasion. It does not tell you who will dance when. At the same event, guests can dance to a band, a dance troupe can perform a prepared routine, and later people can celebrate with a DJ without following set steps. All three parts involve dancing, but you take on a different role in each.
During social dancing, the dance floor is for guests. During the stage program, you watch a rehearsed performance. The party portion can make room for celebrating together, individual partner dances and free movement side by side. So an announcement of dancing on stage is no proof that you will have time to dance yourself.
The combination of celebration and performance also has a historical connection to Augsburg: When the Kurhaus Göggingen opened in 1886, it was used for carnival balls during the first years, outside the theater season. However, this does not tell you what a modern event will be like. For other ball occasions, the guide to public balls in Augsburg offers additional guidance. At a carnival ball, the interplay between performance and participation matters most.
