Basics give simple steps a sense of movement
If you want to learn Hip Hop in Bonn, a fundamentals class may seem unremarkable at first: a step to the side, a weight shift, a repeated knee movement. The learning lies in how you perform this movement to the music. Your weight really needs to arrive over your new supporting leg. Your knees stay loose, and your upper body responds instead of simply holding an upright shape.
A common fundamental is the bounce: a repeated yielding and straightening through the knees. This does not mean staying in a deep squat. Small movements are enough to feel the pulse physically and connect it to a step. Your arms can stay still at first, so that not every part of your body has to take on a new task at the same time.
Repetition here is not a matter of waiting for more difficult moves. It gives you the chance to change your timing, movement size and tension. Trying the same steps to different music also teaches you not to use them only at one memorized point. The article on musical experience before dancing explains why you do not need instrumental lessons for this.
