Understanding the foundation of urban movements
In urban dance, movement differs fundamentally from classical styles. While an upright, often stretched axis dominates in ballet or ballroom dancing, street dance thrives on a deep connection to the floor and enormous flexibility in the upper body. If you want to improve your Hip-Hop body awareness, you must learn to direct your own anatomy in completely new directions. It is about not viewing your joints and muscle groups as a rigid unit, but as a finely tuned system that can react independently.
This deep body awareness does not come from pure strength training, but from conscious perception. Every movement in Hip-Hop has its origin in the center of the body, often in the pelvis or the chest. Only when you learn to target these areas specifically will your movements appear relaxed and controlled at the same time. The foundation for this is an active, relaxed basic posture, where the knees are slightly bent and the weight rests on the balls of your feet. From this position, you have maximum freedom to let impulses travel through your body at lightning speed.
