Learn belly dance belly rolls: wave movement for your core

By Mary De LucaUpdated

In short
  • The belly dance belly roll is created exclusively by the sequential contraction and relaxation of the upper and lower abdominal muscles.
  • The hips and pelvis remain completely still and uninvolved throughout the entire movement.
  • An upright and stable posture is the essential prerequisite for the clean isolation of the muscle groups.
  • Regular, slow training while standing or lying down trains the necessary nerve-muscle connection for the wave.

The belly roll is the epitome of elegance and body control. With the right technique, you control your muscles so precisely that a fascinating, flowing wave is created in your core.

What you need for training

  • A large mirror for visual control of your isolation
  • Comfortable clothing that makes the movement of your belly visible
  • A quiet place to practice without distractions
  • Patience for training new neural pathways

The art of absolute isolation in oriental dance

The fascination of oriental dance lies in the complete control over one's own body. While other dance styles rely on big jumps or expansive steps, belly dance fascinates through microscopically fine movements in the center. To achieve this perfection, targeted training is essential. If you want to refresh your technique after a long break, our guide on returning to belly dance after a break will help you get back into the flow systematically and injury-free.

The belly wave, often referred to in technical jargon as a belly roll, is the supreme discipline of this fine muscle work. The biggest mistake during initial attempts is to use the hips or the pelvis for help. A true wave, however, is created exclusively through the precise, sequential activation of the upper and lower abdominal muscles. The pelvis remains completely motionless and stable during this process. This extreme isolation requires a high level of concentration, but it trains your body awareness and deep muscles like almost no other movement.

5 steps to the perfect body wave

  1. Adopt a stable basic posture

Stand with your feet hip-width apart, bend your knees slightly, and align your pelvis straight. Place your hands on your hip bones to ensure they do not move during the entire exercise.

  2. Isolating the upper abdominal muscles

Pull the area directly under your ribs inward, while the lower abdomen remains relaxed. You will feel the contraction in the upper area of your abdomen, while your pelvis remains stable.

  3. Engaging the lower abdominal muscles

Relax your upper abdomen again and instead pull the area below your belly button inwards. Your pelvis must not tilt backwards while doing this.

  4. Connect the muscles one after the other

First, tense your upper abdomen, add the lower abdomen, then relax the upper abdomen and finally release the lower abdomen. Repeat this process very slowly.

  5. Let the fluid wave emerge

Connect the four phases into one fluid movement by letting the transitions glide into each other without a pause. The wave now visibly travels from top to bottom.

Avoiding mistakes with the belly roll

Correct

  • Keep your pelvis completely still throughout the entire movement
  • Let your breathing flow and never hold your breath
  • Tense the muscle groups in isolation one after the other

Wrong

  • Rocking the pelvis back and forth to gain momentum
  • Holding your breath out of frustration due to a lack of coordination
  • Tensing your entire abdomen convulsively all at once
