Three formats offer you different roles
If you want to go dancing in Zurich, three basic formats can help you find your way. A dance party offers music and space for dancing on your own. At a style-focused party, a particular movement repertoire is often part of the experience, while open dance floors also work without a set sequence of steps. Here, the music creates the shared setting, not continuous instruction.
An activity you can join in, on the other hand, gives you a starting point: someone demonstrates movements, explains a rhythm or leads a short sequence for everyone to follow. This is also possible outside regular classes. A festival can combine these sessions with parties and performances. Zürich Tanzt was founded in 2006; its documented programme included classes, performances, film screenings and parties. So the name of a festival alone does not tell you whether you will be dancing yourself at a particular event.
An open-air event describes the location first, not the format. Outdoors, dancing can be free or guided. At the Street Parade in August 2026, dancing behind the Love Mobiles and in front of stages around the lake basin was part of the event. This is different from a small, guided session.
