Improve body awareness for teenagers: Dance with posture

In short
  • Young people can build an upright posture and good body awareness through targeted training in front of a mirror and small everyday exercises.
  • Consciously perceiving your own body axis while standing and walking improves coordination and ensures a secure stance when dancing.
  • Strong muscle tone provides the dance partner with stability and immediately radiates natural self-confidence on the dance floor.

A strong sense of body awareness doesn't just fall from the sky, it can be trained. With a few simple tricks for your everyday life and in front of the mirror, you will soon stand much more confidently on the dance floor.

What you need for your training

  • A large mirror where you can see yourself at least from the waist up
  • Comfortable everyday clothing that does not restrict your movement
  • A non-slip surface, ideally barefoot or in socks
  • A few minutes of undisturbed time for yourself

Why a strong presence begins in the mind

Your charisma on the dance floor begins long before the first step of the choreography. When you learn how to implement improving body awareness as a teenager in your everyday life, your entire presence changes. An upright posture not only signals self-confidence to the outside world, but also sends positive signals to your own brain. Anyone who stands upright automatically feels more secure and less vulnerable. When dancing, this stability helps you to execute movements more precisely and to keep your balance. You do not have to be a professional athlete for this: it is perfectly sufficient to pay more conscious attention to your own axis in everyday life. If you want to know how to use this physical security in class, our guide on overcoming shyness when dancing will help you further.

udansa tip

Use everyday moments, like waiting at the bus stop, to check your posture. Exhale deeply, let your shoulders drop, and consciously straighten up.

Five steps to the perfect dance posture

  1. Finding your stable stance

Stand barefoot in front of a large mirror. Place your feet hip-width apart and feel how the soles of your feet touch the floor. Distribute your weight evenly between your heels and the balls of your feet to create a stable foundation.

  2. Gently stretch the spine

Imagine there is an invisible thread attached to the back of your head, gently pulling you upwards. This causes your spine to stretch all by itself, while your chin sinks slightly towards your chest and your neck becomes long.

  3. Relax your shoulders

Pull your shoulders up high towards your ears, roll them back, and then let them drop down loosely. Your arms are now hanging relaxed at the sides of your body, without blocking your chest.

  4. Activate your core

Activate your core by pulling your navel slightly inwards and upwards. This stabilizes your pelvis, prevents a hollow back, and gives you the necessary balance for quick turns and changes of direction.

  5. Lift your gaze

Lift your gaze and look yourself confidently in the eyes in the mirror. Try to hold this posture for a few seconds, keep breathing calmly while doing so, and imprint this feeling of greatness and presence well in your mind.
