Theater Bonn and its guest performance series offer two points of entry
Anyone looking for dance theater in Bonn may mean an art form, a performance venue, or the work of an ensemble. That is why two points of reference are important for understanding the local scene: the history of Theater Bonn as an institution, and the guest performance series Highlights of International Dance as a performance format.
Until the 2007/2008 season, Theater Bonn had a Choreographic Theater, most recently under Johann Kresnik. When its own dance division ended, the production structure changed. In the guest performance series documented afterwards, invited international companies brought classical ballet and contemporary dance to the opera house. German premieres were a focus. This information describes the documented development, not today's program.
A theater can present dance without having its own dance company. For a guest performance, an ensemble brings a production it has already developed to another venue. The host provides the performance setting, while the artistic work comes from the invited team. This differs from having its own dance division, where a venue produces continuously with its ensemble.
Ballet and contemporary dance refer to artistic approaches, not organizational structures. Both can be presented as guest performances. You can find more about the local scene in this overview of classes, community and the stage in Bonn.
