Getting started in the world of floor acrobatics requires neither previous gymnastics experience nor extreme flexibility. With the right foundations, you will quickly learn to move elegantly and injury-free on the floor.
Acro Dance Basics refers to the fundamental acrobatic floor movements performed without an aerial phase or a partner. They form the foundation for the coordination between dance steps and acrobatics.
Anyone seeing videos of modern dance styles for the first time is often fascinated by the ease with which dancers glide into the floor and rise again, seemingly weightless. This fusion of dance and acrobatics is called Acro Dance. In contrast to classic floor gymnastics, it is not about stringing together rigid, high-difficulty moves for a panel of judges, but about the fluid transition and emotional expression of a movement. For beginners, this discipline is a wonderful way to train strength, flexibility, and body control at the same time.
The magic lies in the transitions. While gymnasts must remain stable after a landing, dancers use the momentum of the landing to initiate the next element directly. The best way to get started is by learning the Acro Dance basics for floor elements. Anyone who understands the basic movements will quickly lose their fear of the hard floor and learn to perceive it as a partner rather than an obstacle.
Before moving on to complex turns or overhead elements, the focus is on getting used to your own body weight. One of the most important introductory moves is the classic bridge from a supine position. It stretches the front of the body and strengthens the back. Another essential element is the shoulder stand with its various leg variations, which trains balance on the shoulders. Simple forward and backward rolls, which in dance are elegantly rolled over the shoulder rather than the neck, are also part of the mandatory program.
A wonderful example of the combination of acrobatics and dance can also be seen in contemporary dance. Anyone who wants to learn contemporary dance will quickly realize that floor-based elements play a central role there. Controlled sinking and smooth gliding across the floor form the foundation upon which the first acrobatic moves can be safely built.
Correct
Wrong
The floor is not an obstacle to be overcome, but an elastic surface that supports us and extends our movement.
The key to an aesthetic Acro Dance solo does not lie in the most spectacular individual move, but in the quality of the connections. A fluid flow is created when the transitions between standing and floor work become invisible. Beginners often tend to pause briefly before an acrobatic element, adjust their position, and only then start. This breaks the dance line and takes the dynamics out of the performance. The goal is to wrap the preparation of the element into a dance movement.
To train this suppleness, it helps to practice short sequences in a continuous loop. For example, let yourself glide from a standing position to the floor by gently bending your knees, roll over your shoulder, push yourself into a half bridge, and use the momentum to stand up again via the quadruped position. Anyone who internalizes these transitions will soon move with a natural elegance that fills the entire room.
The bridge for flexibility
The bridge stretches the entire front of the body and opens the chest. It requires good mobility in the shoulders and lower back, while simultaneously strengthening the legs and creating the foundation for later backbends.
The shoulder roll for dynamics
The shoulder roll trains the feeling for your own body weight and contact with the floor. It requires coordination and core strength to execute the movement smoothly and without pressure on your neck.
You do not need exceptional flexibility to get started. You will build the necessary flexibility for the moves gradually over the course of your training through regular, targeted stretching.
It is best to train on a soft gymnastics mat or a thin exercise mat at the beginning. This protects your joints and takes away the fear of the hard floor until you have mastered the technique.
Tight, elastic sportswear is ideal because it offers full freedom of movement and does not get tangled around your knees or shoulders. It is best to train barefoot for optimal grip.
