Walking in Argentine Tango is not a simple stroll, but a conscious dance step full of elegance and precision. With the right technique and a clean weight transfer, you lay the foundation for a harmonious interaction as a couple.

Stand up straight and shift your entire weight onto one leg. The other leg becomes the free leg, which rests loosely on the floor without any weight.
Actively push off the floor with your standing leg to shift your center of gravity forward. As you do this, your free leg glides forward across the floor, relaxed and extended.
Place the foot of the working leg down with the ball of the foot first and roll it through softly. Only when the foot is flat do you shift your body weight completely onto this new standing leg.
Bring the now free, back leg forward, passing closely by the standing leg. This moment of passing creates the typical, elegant line in Argentine Tango.

In Argentine Tango, you step with the ball of your foot first when moving forward and then roll softly over the heel. When moving backward, you extend your toe far back, place the ball of your foot on the floor first, and then lower the heel once your weight has been fully transferred.
You prevent bouncing by keeping your knees slightly elastic and bent throughout the entire movement. Avoid fully straightening your standing leg during the step and keep your center of gravity on a constant, horizontal plane parallel to the floor.
The free leg is the unweighted leg that can move freely and prepare for the next step. The standing leg carries your entire body weight and provides balance as well as the necessary push to move your body forward or backward in a controlled manner.
