If you leave the world of dance badges behind and are looking for real competition, you enter the official system of performance classes. The start in Latin tournament dance begins for every couple in the lowest class, the so-called D-class. From there, athletes work their way up through the C, B, and A classes to the special class, the S-class. Each of these tournament classes for Latin American dances brings stricter rules regarding permitted step material and clothing.
In the D-class, choreographies are strictly regulated. The official Latin tournament rules specify exactly which figures may be shown to ensure that couples focus on the elementary basics. Only in higher classes like the B or A class do these restrictions fall away, creating space for spectacular, individual choreographies and peak athletic performance. Clothing is also strictly controlled, as sparkling jewelry and elaborate dresses are usually only permitted from the C-class onwards.
Promotion to the next class takes place via a points system. At every tournament, couples collect placement points and so-called promotion points, based on the number of competitors they have beaten. Once you have reached a certain number of points and podium placements, you are required to move up to the next higher class and face new challenges there.
