Ball season etiquette: do's & don'ts for the Waltz

Ball season etiquette: do's & don'ts for the Waltz

  • Dance counter-clockwise along the edge of the floor.
  • Say thank you after every dance.
  • Only decline an invitation if you are sitting out that dance, not because of the person.

A dance ball is elegant and sometimes a bit intimidating. The most important rules are quickly explained, after that all that matters is that you are there.

What you need beforehand

  • Shoes with a smooth sole, no rubber soles
  • The basic step in the Waltz
  • A look at the dress code on the invitation
  • Some small change for the cloakroom

How a dance floor works

A dance floor has a line of dance and a center. The outside is for moving around, the inside is for turning. If you know these two zones, you will hardly do anything wrong on the floor: everything else is just courtesy.

udansa tip

Practice the basic step once without music, just by counting: afterwards, it is easier not to lose it in the hustle and bustle of the dance floor.

The ball evening in five steps

Arrive and observe

Gäste beobachten die Ballfläche vom Rand

First, take a round to observe from the edge: how crowded is the floor, where is the dance direction, and which dances are playing.

Invite, do not pull

Person bietet die Hand zur Tanzeinladung

Approach briefly, make eye contact, offer your hand. No one is pulled by the arm, a no is a no.

Entering from the edge

Tanzpaar steigt am Rand der Fläche ein

Enter the flow of the dance, do not cross through the middle. If you wait for a gap, you will not disturb anyone.

Keep it simple

Paar tanzt eine ruhige Figur im Walzer

Two figures, danced cleanly, look better than eight rushed ones. On a crowded floor, a sense of space is more important than your repertoire.

Saying thanks and escorting back

Tanzpaar verlässt gemeinsam die Fläche

After the dance, say a quick thank you and escort the person back to their seat. This is the part that everyone notices.
