Mambo Side Steps: How to learn the side step

In a nutshell
  • The Mambo side steps shift the classic forward-backward movement of the basic step directly onto the lateral axis.
  • The rhythmic sequence on beats two, three, and four remains exactly the same as in the basic step.
  • A clean weight transfer onto the active foot is crucial to maintain balance during the quick return.
  • The arms and upper body remain stable and loosely absorb the lateral dynamics.

Mambo thrives on its rhythmic variety and lively changes of direction. With side steps, you break free from the rigid back and forth and bring elegant flair to your footwork.

What you need for your training

  • Secure Mambo basic step on the beat
  • Feeling for the rhythmic pause on the one
  • Shoes with a sole that slides well
  • Some space in the room for lateral movements

From the basic step to side-flow in Mambo

The classic forward-backward basic step is the solid foundation upon which your Mambo is built. However, it is only through lateral steps, the so-called side steps, that you bring dynamics and variety to your dance flow. Switching from the familiar forward-and-backward movement to the side requires some concentration at first, as the direction of your weight shift changes completely. If you have already mastered the Mambo basic step, this transition is the ideal next step.

The Mambo side step technique is based on your hips and knees softly cushioning the change in direction. Instead of placing your foot forward or backward, you open up directly to the side while your upper body remains stable. This movement opens up space for later Mambo step variation basics and ensures that you can move more freely on the dance floor without taking up much space. It is not about expansive figures, but about the precise control of your center of gravity with every single step.

6 steps to the perfect Mambo side step

  1. Take your starting position

Start in the neutral starting position, where your feet are next to each other and your weight is evenly distributed. Keep your knees relaxed.

  2. Open to the left

Place your left foot on the second beat directly to the outside left and shift your weight completely onto this leg.

  3. Rock step in place

Briefly transfer your weight back onto your right foot on count three, keeping it in place without moving it away.

  4. Close feet and pause

Close your left foot precisely next to your right foot on beat four and hold the position on the one for the pause.

  5. Open to the right

Now place your right foot to the outside on the right on beat two and shift your weight completely to the right side.

  6. Rock back and close

On count three, rock your weight back onto your left foot and close your right foot back to the starting position on count four.
