The history of house music: How beats conquered the clubs

In Clubs wie dem legendären Warehouse, das vor allem von der schwarzen und queeren Community besucht wurde, entstand aus den Scherben von Disco ein völlig neuer Sound. Resident-DJ Frankie Knuckles begann, alte Soul-, Funk- und Disco-Platten mit europäischen Synthesizer-Importen und harten Beats aus der Drum-Machine zu mischen. Aus dem Clubnamen Warehouse leitete sich schließlich der Begriff ab, der eine ganze Epoche prägen sollte: House.

A few blocks away, Ron Hardy set even more radical accents at the Music Box. While Frankie Knuckles provided an elegant, melodic flow at the Warehouse, Hardy's style was loud, wild, and experimental. He sped up records, played them backwards, and relied on extreme bass. This raw energy pushed dancers to their physical limits and redefined the city's sound. In this heated atmosphere, the acid house development emerged in the mid-eighties through the use of the Roland TB-303 synthesizer, its chirping, psychedelic basslines taking dance floors by storm.

The music was closely linked to the emergence of modern dance forms. Unlike classical partner dance, house dance is about the individual interpretation of the rhythm within a collective. Movement on the dance floor became a physical outlet for the pressures of everyday life. The clubs were not mere temples of consumption, but social melting pots where social barriers fell and the music took absolute control.

What began in the Chicago underground quickly developed into a global phenomenon. Via imported records, Chicago House reached Europe, where it triggered a veritable cultural revolution during the British Second Summer of Love in the late eighties and in the clubs of Ibiza. The intimate club culture turned into a worldwide mass movement. The hypnotic beats laid the foundation for the entire modern rave culture and shaped countless subgenres from Techno to Deep House.

Today, electronic dance music is an indispensable part of the global club landscape. The energy that was once released in the warehouse still vibrates on every dance floor. Anyone dancing to electronic beats today is continuing a tradition based on tolerance, community, and the irrepressible power of rhythm. It is a global social dance that connects people across all borders.
