Whether you are fascinated by the majestic three-quarter time or the driving rhythm of swing: on udansa you will meet like-minded people who share your passion for historical sounds. Make connections and experience the magic of past eras together on the dance floor.
Find out with our interactive self-test which decade or century your dancing soul lives in and which era of music history perfectly matches your character.
The history of dance music is a fascinating journey through the centuries, where social upheavals were always reflected in the rhythm on the dance floor. From the strict court ceremonies of the Renaissance to the wild rebellion that ushered in the history of the Viennese Waltz, and on to the ecstasy of the New York clubs of the seventies: every era has brought forth its own unique dance-musical soul. When you step onto the dance floor today, you are always dancing a piece of history as well.
But which historical rhythm really makes your personality resonate? Are you more of a structured aesthete who finds peace in the ceremonial step of the Baroque, or are you drawn to the unbridled energy of jazz? Our interactive self-test helps you to locate your dance home in history and to understand how the music of days gone by can influence your movements in the here and now.
You appreciate clear structures, symmetry, and a dignified posture on the dance floor. The wild chaos of modern clubs is foreign to you, and you thrive at festive occasions and precisely coordinated choreographies. You should best busy yourself with historical dances like the Pavane, the Minuet, or attend classic traditional balls.
For you, dancing is pure joy, community, and rhythmic freedom. You love the syncopated beats of the big bands and the relaxed, humorous interaction between partners. Use this result to dive into the world of Lindy Hop, Balboa, or Charleston and bring the energy of the Roaring Twenties back to life.
On the dance floor, you look for a deep emotional connection, drama, and the subtle melancholy of great melodies. Your movements are elegant, fluid, and full of expression. Classic partner dances like the slow Waltz or Argentine Tango are the perfect stage for your dancing personality.
You dance to lose yourself completely in the rhythm, to move freely, and to feel the bass throughout your entire body. The social pressure of rigid step sequences feels restrictive, you love the pulsating energy of a crowded dance floor. Styles like Discofox, House, or free dance improvisation fit your irrepressible urge to move perfectly.
| Criterion | Courtly era | Swing era | Modern club culture |
|---|---|---|---|
| Focus | Posture and etiquette | Rhythm and dynamics | Free expression and bass |
| Partner connection | Distant elegance | Playful dialogue | Individual freedom |
| Learning effort | High (choreographies) | Medium (basic steps) | Low (improvisation) |
The historical classification shows the dominant characteristics of the respective dance eras in direct comparison.
As soon as you know your test result, you can use this knowledge to specifically expand your perception of dance. For example, those who find themselves in Swing usually appreciate the playful freedom and the close communication within the pair. A deeper look into the history of Swing music reveals how much this music lived from improvisation and the breaking of old conventions. This helps you to shift the focus when dancing away from rigid figures and towards pure musicality.
If the test led you more towards the elegant ballrooms of the 19th century, it is worth exploring the fine nuances of the classic three-quarter time. A deeper understanding of the Waltz beat trains your ear for the subtle accents of the strings and lets you glide more majestically across the dance floor. Use your historical profile as a compass for your next dance class or the music selection when practicing at home.
The dance music era test assigns your preferences to the four great eras of dance history: courtly elegance, the swing era, the passionate salon era, and modern club culture. This way, you find out which historical type you are.
No, the test does not require any historical expertise. It only asks questions about your personal habits, your desire to move, and your feeling for music.
Your test result shows you which rhythms and forms of movement suit your character particularly well. This helps you when choosing new dance styles or historical dance events.
