Learn the Discofox basic step: A step-by-step guide

By Bernhard De LucaUpdated

In a nutshell
  • The classic Discofox basic step is based on a simple triple meter, which is danced to four beats of the music.
  • The step sequence consists of two actual steps with a full weight transfer and a final tap without a weight change.
  • The leader always begins the movement with the left foot forward or to the side, while the follower mirrors this by stepping back with the right foot.
  • Due to the tap at the end, the foot remains free, which is used to initiate the next basic step in the opposite direction.

Why a solid foundation is the key to Discofox

Discofox is the undisputed king of the dance floor because it fits almost any music in a four-four time signature. Whether it is Schlager, pop, Eurodance, or current club charts: if you master this dance, you will never have to stand on the sidelines at a party again. The key to this success lies in its brilliant simplicity. The classic three-step rhythm requires hardly any space and can be wonderfully controlled even on a crowded dance floor. Before you venture into complicated figures, it is crucial to internalize the basic steps. This gives you the necessary confidence to focus entirely on the rhythm and your dance partner.

When learning, it is primarily about developing a feel for weight transfer. Many beginners make the mistake of just counting the steps in their head instead of feeling them in their body. Once you have internalized the basic movement sequence, the step happens completely automatically. You no longer have to think about where to place your next foot. This automaticity is the foundation upon which everything else is built later. So, take enough time for the basics, because clean footwork distinguishes the relaxed dancer from the stressed beginner.

Keep your gaze at eye level: when practicing the basic step together in a circle, you quickly develop a feel for the shared rhythm.

Master the basic step in five steps with udansa

  1. Taking the dance position

Stand facing each other. The leader places their right hand on the follower's left shoulder blade, while the follower rests their left hand relaxed on the leader's right shoulder. The free hands hold each other loosely.

  2. The first step on beat one

The leader takes a small step with the left foot to the front left, while the follower mirrors this by stepping back with the right foot to the back right. Transfer your weight completely onto this foot.

  3. The second step on beat two

The leader places the right foot next to the left, while the follower places the left foot next to the right. Here too, the body weight is shifted completely onto the newly placed foot.

  4. The tap on beat three and four

The leader taps their left toe briefly next to their right foot, while the follower taps their right toe next to their left foot. The weight remains on the standing leg so that the foot is free for the next sequence.

  5. Repeat the movement fluidly

Repeat this movement loop fluidly from the beginning. Use the free foot from the tap to start directly with the first step of the new cycle, without taking a break.
