Salsa LA Style basic step: guide for linear dancing

By Bernhard De LucaUpdated

In a nutshell
  • The Salsa LA Style basic step is danced on a straight, imaginary line in the room.
  • The movement starts on the first beat of the measure, which is why this style is also referred to as Salsa On 1.
  • Both leaders and followers dance a symmetrical step pattern consisting of forward and backward steps.
  • On counts four and eight, a short pause is taken where the weight is held.

What makes Salsa LA Style so special

The Los Angeles style, often simply referred to as LA Style, is one of the most popular variations of Salsa worldwide. Its most important characteristic is the linear spatial layout. In contrast to Cuban Salsa, where partners move in a circle around each other, you dance here on an imaginary, narrow line, the so-called slot. Anyone who understands this structure learns the steps significantly faster. Getting started works best by understanding the rhythm: we dance on the one, which means that the first, powerful step coincides exactly with the first beat of the measure. To get a feel for the music, it helps to familiarize yourself with the Salsa rhythm beforehand. As soon as the timing is right, you can focus entirely on the precise alignment of your feet.

The dynamics on the line

Because the space on the line is limited, LA Style requires clean footwork. The steps are set small and controlled so that partners do not step on each other's feet or leave the slot. This linear alignment provides the style's typically elegant, dynamic appearance. Once you have mastered the basics, it will be easier for you to compare it with other varieties later, which you can discover in the guide on Salsa dance styles. For the beginning, it is perfectly sufficient to dance the pure basic step stably without turns or arm movements. Focus on shifting your weight completely with every step to maintain your balance.

Step by step to the perfect basic step

  1. Taking the starting position

Stand up straight, with your feet parallel and hip-width apart directly on your imaginary line. Distribute your weight evenly on both balls of your feet so that you are ready to start at any time.

  2. Place the first step on count 1

Leaders take a controlled step forward with the left foot on count one. Followers simultaneously step back with the right foot. The weight is transferred immediately.

  3. Shift the weight to 2

On count two, you shift your weight onto the other foot, which has remained in place. Your body sways back slightly, without you moving your feet far.

  4. Back to the center on 3 and 4

Bring the active foot back to the center next to the other foot on count three and shift your full weight onto it. On count four, hold this position stable and pause briefly.

  5. Execute the step back on 5

Leaders take a step back with their right foot on count five. Followers simultaneously place their left foot forward. Transfer your weight completely here as well.

  6. Shift the weight back to 6

Shift your weight back to the front foot that remained in place on count six. Keep your upper body upright and stable over the line while doing so.

  7. Close in the center on 7 and 8

Close the active foot back to the starting position in the center on count seven. Keep your weight on this foot and use count eight for the rhythmic pause.
