The path to your first amateur tournament in Latin dance is an intensive journey that brings a couple closer together, both in terms of dance and mentality. It usually starts with the decision to leave pure social dancing behind and face the challenge of competition. For our example couple, this meant completely redefining the steps they were used to. The focus was not on the complexity of the figures, but on clean technical execution. A solid foundation is essential in competitive dance to hold your own in front of the judges.
The characteristic hip movement and rhythm of the Samba, in particular, require the highest precision in tournament training. To bring their footwork to the necessary level, targeted exercises for the ankles were helpful. If you want to strengthen your base, you will find valuable technical approaches in the Learn Samba bounce technique: step-by-step guide, which also make the decisive difference for entering tournaments. In addition to pure technical training, the main goal for the couple was to build up their stamina to get through the minute and a half of peak performance per dance without visible fatigue.

Reduce the choreography to the permitted figures of the entry-level class and polish the absolutely flawless execution of every single step.
Train the Samba sequences several times in a row with full energy to build the necessary endurance for the ninety seconds on the competition floor.
Simulate the tournament scenario in training by dancing with other couples in a confined space at the same time to practice avoiding others and spatial orientation.
Familiarize yourself with the schedule, the start number distribution, and the venue layout in advance to avoid unnecessary stress on the day of the tournament.
In a grassroots tournament, all couples in a starting class usually dance on the floor at the same time in a preliminary round. The judges award crosses to the best couples, who then qualify for the final round, where places one through six are determined either openly or secretly.
For your first Samba tournament in grassroots sports, clean, well-maintained practice clothes or simple competition attire without glitter and feathers is perfectly sufficient. It is important that the clothing complies with the official guidelines of the respective association and makes the movements of the legs and hips clearly visible to the judges.
A typical competition dance in grassroots sports lasts between 1:30 and 2:00 minutes. In this short time, the couples must present their choreography flawlessly, dynamically, and with maximum presence, which requires excellent aerobic endurance.
Find the right training to prepare your technique for the next level.
